Quadriceps Tendon Rupture

Quadriceps Tendon Rupture

Quadriceps tendon rupture is a serious injury that occurs when the tendon connecting the quadriceps muscles to the patella (kneecap) tears partially or completely. At Dr. Isaac Bone & Joint Speciality Hospital, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of quadriceps tendon ruptures, offering comprehensive care to help patients regain strength and function in the affected knee.

This injury typically occurs due to a sudden, forceful contraction of the quadriceps muscles, often during activities that involve jumping, running, or sudden stops and starts. Quadriceps tendon ruptures can also occur as a result of chronic degeneration of the tendon due to aging, overuse, or underlying medical conditions such as tendinopathy or systemic diseases like diabetes.

Symptoms of quadriceps tendon rupture may include a sudden, sharp pain in the front of the knee, swelling, bruising, and difficulty straightening the leg or bearing weight on the affected knee. In cases of complete rupture, there may be a noticeable gap or indentation at the top of the kneecap where the tendon has torn.

Diagnosis of quadriceps tendon rupture is typically made based on a physical examination, assessment of symptoms, and imaging studies such as ultrasound or MRI to confirm the extent of tendon damage and rule out associated injuries.

Treatment of quadriceps tendon rupture usually requires surgical repair to reattach the torn tendon to the patella and restore normal function to the knee joint. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision over the knee and sews the torn tendon back together, often using sutures or anchors to secure the tendon to the bone. In some cases, additional reinforcement with graft tissue or other materials may be necessary to strengthen the repair.

Following surgery, patients undergo a period of immobilization and rehabilitation to protect the repair and promote healing. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in restoring strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the affected knee, allowing patients to gradually return to their normal activities.

At Dr. Isaac Bone & Joint Speciality Hospital, our team of orthopedic specialists is dedicated to providing personalized care to patients with quadriceps tendon ruptures. We work closely with each individual to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to their specific needs and goals, with the aim of optimizing recovery and restoring function to the knee joint.
